Montañez Ortiz, director fundador de El Museo del Barrio, desarrolló una obra performativa donde el artista asume la función de un chamán que, por medio de rituales esencialmente violentos, revierte la lógica represiva que el ser humano social ha impuesto a los objetos que ha creado y, por extensión, a sí mismo. Montañez Ortiz, founding director of El Museo del Barrio, developed a performative oeuvre where the artist assumes the role of a shaman. Through essentially violent rituals, he reverts the repressive logic that human beings have imposed on the objects they have created and, by extension, on themselves. He established his process of “destructivism” from the late 1950s until 1961, when he began creating the Archaelogical Finds, or ritually transformed, found materials. Some were private ceremonias wrought with his own furniture, while others were public events, most often utilizing pianos. In 1966 he was a featured artist at the “Destruction in Art Symposium” (dias) in London, England, where he presented public Destruction Realizations involving chairs, pianos, paper bags, and his own body. In 1968, Montañez Ortiz’s Piano Destruction Concerts were presented live on the Johnny Carson television show. He also carried out cathartic performances with living chickens (which were sometimos sacrificed), including The Death of White Henny and Black Penny at Judson Church, New York.
